WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
The note of the word hypnosis came from the surgeon Franz Braid in 1841-2 who was the first sincere hypnotherapist. Braid was inspired by Franz Mesmers work on animal magnetism which was where the term mesmerize originated.
Braid take the terms hypnosis and hypnotism from the term neuro-hypnotism meaning nervous quietus. (Wikipedia).
When deal think of hypnosis they usually associate the drill with the entertainment indication of stage hypnosis. However the more widely used practise is as a therapeutic tool and known as hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis is not a new practise but genius dating back thousands of years. Egyptian priests used hypnotism to slightness illnesses whilst in Greece people would worship the god Hypnos the god of sleep for healing and prophetic dreams (Bryant & Mabbutt 2006).
Although hypnosis is usually thought of as an unconscious(p) type of sleep it is in fact when a somebody is fully awake but concentrating on the hypnotists voice and unaware of the sounds and occurrences around them. During this time whilst the person is deep relaxed the hypnotherapist can make post hypnotic suggestions to them, which will uphold in their sub-conscious mind allowing changes to occur. It was during this relaxed state that French psychiatrists Charcot and Janet, discovered the agreement hypnosis was helpful to patients was that it gave access to an area of the mind that was not accessible during normal waking consciousness (McLeod 1998).
