Just like precious metals, our fellowship with oil dates back hundreds of years. Originally use of goods and servicesd for lighting and heating, that gentle crude has become the life blood of modern nations. Since the drilling of Americas first oil well by Edward Drake in Titusville, PA in 1859, Americas goose egg history has been a stormy and troubled past (Holmes).
Since the opening of the first affordable automobile in 1908 (Model T), Americas appetite for oil has grown especially over the die hard several decades, even as other forms of energy break replaced oil for some of our energy needs like heating, lighting, and galvanizing generation. During this era, America produced the majority of the oil it needed for our own use domestically. This soon began to change drastically and in 1970 the United States prise of oil exports fell below the value of oil it import making us a net importer of oil (Homans 2). By 1994, the United States began to import more oil than it produced. At that time the Deputy Energy Secretary said that this was the largest trade fuss facing America (Homans 3).
To daytime the world consumes about 85 one thousand million barrels of oil per day with the United States overwhelming 24% of that total or about 20 million barrels a day.



From those 20 million barrels of oil, America imports 65% or 13 million barrels per day (Central Intelligence Agency). According to these numbers, it is obvious that America is dangerously aquiline on foreign energy sources. America has the means and capability and must become energy independent as a matter of national security, to create jobs, strengthen our economy, and stop enriching countries that adoptt have our best interest in mind.
