In both the verse form Half-Caste by John Agard and the poem drear Joke on a Marae by Apirana Taylor, the author uses a variety of language techniques to help express and reinforce the ideas presented in the texts. Agard uses allusions to compare his being of mixed public life to the unconventional witness in Picassos masterpieces and Tchaikovskys compositions, both of which are mixtures of disparate elements that come together to create what is generally considered to be slap-up art. Taylor weaves Maori words into his poem to help connect the language to the Maori grow and show its importance. This also serves to reiterate how little Maori Tu knows and how that relates to his separation from the Maori refining and traditions. John Agard also uses direct address in Half-Caste, which implicates the reviewer and provokes thought towards their preconceived notions behind the term half-caste. The techniques used in these two poems are important as they help to enunciate the messages in the texts and how they are intended to be interpreted.
