Literal Content In this passage from The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Pearl and her mother Hester are walking through and through the woods when Pearl tells her mother that the sunshine doesnt love her. Here Pearl, being the smart, devilish child she is, notices that her mother isnt like all mothers. Pearl tells her mom that when she is older, she will ca-ca an A on her bosom (thinking it is normal).
