Mother, said litter Pearl, the sunniness does non make love you. It pelt alongs away(p) and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom. Now see! Nor ever will, my child, I hope, said Hester. And why not, mother? asked Pearl, stopping short, just at the beginning of her race. Will not it come of its own accord, when I am a cleaning woman grown? Run away, child, answered her mother, and catch the cheerfulness! It will soon be gone. (Hawthorne 168)
Literal Content In this passage from The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Pearl and her mother Hester are walking through and through the woods when Pearl tells her mother that the sunshine doesnt love her. Here Pearl, being the smart, devilish child she is, notices that her mother isnt like all mothers. Pearl tells her mom that when she is older, she will ca-ca an A on her bosom (thinking it is normal).
However, Hester explains to her that hopefully she will neer have to wear the A and tells Pearl to catch the sunshine because soon it will be gone, meaning to enjoy flavor because you never know what will come tomorrow. This important spell of the story takes place in chapter sixteen, towards the middle/end of the novel.
rhetorical Language This passage holds important symbols. To begin, the sunshine that Pearl is talk of the town about is really sort of the life or federation. The sunshine doesnt love Hester meaning Hester is always looked down upon and society doesnt love her. Pearl is a smart child and can sense that Hester is not like all mothers for she is not bright and always smiling. The sunshine symbolizes the society and life of the Puritans and how Hester is not accepted in it.
