What is the meaning of life? This is a universal psyche which man has struggled to answer since the beginning of time. It has lead us to formulate further questions such as; why are we resilient and who put us on this earth? Tons of philosophers and any day people have been creating theories to try and answer these questions. One of these major theories is called existential philosophy. Wikipedia simply defines existentialism as, the only personality we as humans have is the nature we make for ourselves. As a result of this, existentialists think that the actions or choices that a person makes are very important. They believe that every person has to decide for themselves what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad. Therefore, the way we permit external factors affect us ultimately determines who we are. As individuals we have control over our choices which in period of play affects our lives such as choosing what we desire to do and who we want to be. In the novel, The Heart of Darkness, the agonist Charlie Marlow decides what his actions will be, but he allows his decisions and actions to be influenced by ternion significant external factors just ab forbidden him.

Both the Congo River and the Thames River ferment a huge part in the novel and affects Marlow in many ways. Firstly, the novel begins with a bunch of men lazing around a yacht waiting for the tide to go out on the Thames River. The flood had made, the wind was nearly calm, and
