In the first section of the novel, the teller makems to obsess over the fact others are blind to his existence. He takes us into his elaborate world, a life of homelessness, thievery, and loneliness in the city of Harlem. Unfortunately, the storyteller is continually hypocritical and revieweruses to overtake the truth about compacts apparent blindness. He suffers only what he requires to see as to victimize himself and his continued misanthropic behavior makes the ref question his credibility. By asking society to reject their blindness, the fabricator does not realize that he, too, would have to do so as well. In the beginning of the novel, the teller (who insists on being nameless) is base on balls down the street when he ran into a white staminate who called him an insulting name. Instead of igno plurality the confrontation and continuing onward, the narrator decides to scold the man up--kicking, punching and nearly killing him (Ellison 4-5). The following morn ing, the paper publicize reads that the male was mugged, and this infuriates the narrator (Ellison 5). He now feels the likes of he is invisible for the fact that his side of the story was neer heard, and this ultimately victimizes the male, although the insulting name was what started the fight.

What the narrator fails to realize is that by secrecy his identity, no one will ever see him. This is hypocritical, as he continues to hide himself, and then gets frustrated for never being seen. At the Battle Royal, where the narrator is supposed to advance a speech in front of a concourse of blind drunk individuals, he is thrown into some WWE-style persona fighting! ring where he is forced to fight others against his will. Upon the decision of the fight, he is however allowed to give his speech, although he is exhausted and bleeding. The auditory modality applauds his speech upon its completion, recognizing his excellent speaking skills (Ellison 29-33).
