Pros and Cons of Virgina Tech Media Release

On April 16th, 2007, the snapshots at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University took place. cardinal year old Seung-Hui Cho went on a rampage at Virginia Tech. In middle school Cho had been diagnosed with a severe fretfulness disorder known as selective mutism as well as major depressive disorder. Around 7:15 A.M. Cho fired his introductory rounds killing two students- Emily J. Hilscher and Ryan C. Clark. After the first two killings, Cho returned to his room and mailed a big bucks to NBC News. The package contained pictures, digital video files, and documents. After mailing the package, Cho continued his shooting spree killing thirty-three people and eventually committing suicide. On April 18th, NBC made the controversial decision to air some of the visible they had current in the package from Cho. The airing of the tape received mixed emotions and opinions. Some believed that by revealing the tapes to the domain was prerequisite to keep from sheltering the public of the real problems at hand. Others believed airing the tapes would totally give the killer what he wanted, expose families during an emotional time, and movement copy-cat killings. NBC News defended its decision to release the video and pictures from the killer. NBC News chair Steve Kapas claimed that with airing the tapes, we would come as close to the mind of a crook as possible. There are not umpteen time where we as the public get a hap to see what criminals are thinking when they commit their acts.



Many times when there is a way to get into a criminal’s mind, the public is closed off from any such information.
