The split in Shiftlet's soul caused by the disconnection between his belief and his actions makes him vulnerable to change for the better.

The Misfit's plan is forgive from the beginning--he is going to murder the entire family. He is only momentarily distracted by the old charr's pleading. Shiftlet's plan is also acquire from beginning to end---he wants to acquire the old woman's car. Unlike the Misfit, however, he is not willing or able to do physical violence in order to get what he wants. What he does do

Listening to him cerebrate about Jesus, she moves toward grace and forgiveness, reaching out to him as "one of [her] own children" ("Good" 2157), and her change brings about a budge in him back to his original hatred and rage. Shiftlet and the old woman are both deceivers, but he is the more ruthless, outsmarting her. However, unlike the Misfit, Shiftlet is changed by the encounter, at least for the moment, as his conscience is pricked at the end of the story.

Shiftlet fails to see, in his lack of self-awareness, that it is he his rotten self, and not the rotten world, which has deceived the old woman and abandoned the girl for an automobile. At least the Misfit takes full responsibility for his evil acts.
